happy birthday, mom!

i went to see the opera Carmen on saturday night, and ever since i've had three of the songs vying for top billing in my head. the winner seems to be...

toreador, en garde!
toreador! toreador!

oh, and a great film showed at the union last night. No Man's Land. the winner of the academy award last year for best foreign film, and depicting three soldiers stuck in a trench together during the bosnian conflict. a bleak, yet darkly humorous vision of the ridiculousness of wars with a cynical view of the un efforts at neutrality and the presses efforts at sensationalizm. but still very human, i thought.

the squirtus and i kind of went overboard with the british movies this weekend. amongst our other playtime activities, we managed to watch:
- what a girl wants
- hornblower: mutiny and retribution
- the importance of being earnest
- bend it like beckham
- lady jane

i'm not sure when we found time to watch all those movies. but it was gray and rainy most of the four days she was here, so that forced us to substitute our lazy sunny outdoors time with lazy indoors time. mix in lifting weights (the squirtus is the angel on my shoulder), cooking, thrift stores, dancing, and music, and you've got yourself one busy weekend of relaxing.

the squirtus is coming to visit today for her easter break! hopefully the rain will hold off until after the weekend, or we'll have to resort to only the indoor sort of playing...

well, tax season is officially over, and i've managed to get $221 back this year from state and federal refunds. not as much as i'd like, but hey, any day i don't have to owe something is a good day.

roshan, one of my housemates, compiled a booklet of peace writings, entitled "Shifting the Debate: Musings by Advocates of Peace at Davidson College, NC". you can read it here or print it out.

i'm so excited! today is the health fair at the union, and they did cholesterol testing...and mine is under 150! mom and grandaddy (at least) have battled high cholesterol, and i was kind of worried that i would have a hard time with it as well. but not yet, it seems! hurrah! oh, and i got a little chair massage that worked wonders for the tension in my shoulders. bless those therapists...

the only strange thing was the lady at the bmi table asking me if i was a soccer player. how random. do i look like a soccer player? i guess i'll take that as a compliment on my apparent fitness level (even though it's not true!)...
