Double-stripe socks

Toe-up socks with contrasting toe, heel, and two stripes. This sock pattern was generated with the Universal toe-up sock formula from the Summer 2006 issue of Knitty.

Size/Measurements

Women's medium (US size 8.5)

Materials

  • MC (main color): Knitpicks Essential Tweed Sock Yarn (65% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon, 10% donegal; 231 yards/50 grams) in Plum; 1 skein.
  • CC (contrast color): Knitpicks Essential Sock Yarn (75% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon; 231 yards/50 grams) in Grass; 1 skein.
  • 1 set US #2/2.75mm DPNs (or size to get gauge)
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

32 sts/45 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch

Notes

Wrap stitch:
RS row: Knit to specified stitch, bring yarn to front of work, slip next stitch onto right needle, bring yarn around to back, and slip stitch back onto left needle.
WS row: Purl to specified stitch, bring yarn to back of work, slip next stitch onto right needle, bring yarn around to front, and slip stitch back onto left needle.

Work wrapped stitches:
RS row: Knit to wrapped stitch. Slip wrapped stitch to right needle, lift wrap (or wraps if stitch is double-wrapped) onto right needle. Insert left needle into both (or all three) stitches and knit together.
WS row: Purl to wrapped stitch. Slip wrapped stitch to right needle, lift wrap (or wraps if stitch is double-wrapped) onto right needle. Insert left needle into both (or all three) stitches and purl together.

Invisible Bind-off for 1x1 rib:
Cut working yarn to at least 4 times the width of the stitches you are binding off, and thread onto a tapestry needle.
1Insert needle knitwise into first stitch of ribbing (should be a knit stitch) and let stitch drop.
2Insert needle into next knit stitch (skip the first purl stitch on the needle for the moment) and pull yarn through, but do not drop off.
3Insert needle purlwise into firt purl stitch and drop stitch.
4Insert needle from the back into space between next knit stitch and next purl stitch, then knitwise into purl stitch.
Repeat from 1 until all stitches are bound off.

Instructions

  • Toe
  • Using CC, cast on 32 stitches using provisional crochet cast on. (Put all stitches on one needle for now)
  • Row 1 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  • Row 2 (RS): Knit to last stitch, wrap stitch, turn work.
  • Row 3: Purl to last stitch, wrap stitch, turn work.
  • Row 4: K to stitch before last wrapped stitch, wrap next stitch, turn work.
  • Row 5: P to stitch before last wrapped stitch, wrap next stitch, turn work.
  • Repeat rows 4 & 5 until 12 sts remain between wrapped sts on each end of work (you will end with a WS row).
  • Row 6 (RS): K to first wrapped st, K wrapped st, wrap next stitch, turn work.
  • Row 7 (WS): Slip 1 stitch, P to first wrapped st, P wrapped st, wrap next stitch, turn work.
  • Row 8: Sl 1, K to first double-wrapped stitch, K double wrapped st, wrap next stitch, turn work.
  • Row 9: Sl 1, P to first double-wrapped stitch, P double wrapped st, wrap next stitch, turn work.
  • Repeat rows 8 & 9 until 1 double-wrapped stitch remains at each end of your work.
  • Row 10 (RS): Sl1, K to first double-wrapped stitch, K double-wrapped stitch (do not turn work).
  • Unpick crocheted cast on and put live stitches on 2 needles. Knit around.
  • Foot
  • Switch to MC and work around in stockinette until piece measures 8 inches from tip of toe.
  • Heel
  • Put first 32 stitches on one needle and work heel only over these stitches.
  • Using CC, repeat Rows 1-10 (heel is worked the same way as the toe).
  • Leg
  • Switch to MC and work across last row of heel, working last wrapped stitch together with wraps as you go.
  • Work around in stockinette for approx. 3 inches.
  • Switch to CC and work 5 rounds.
  • Switch to MC and work 5 rounds.
  • Switch to CC and work 5 rounds.
  • Switch to MC and 9 rounds in 1x1 rib (K1, P1).
  • Bind off using Invisible Bind-off or other elastic bind-off of your choice.
  • Weave in ends.
  • Make second sock.
