Jaunty Tam

This classic tam is dressed up with a moss-stitch band and button detail. And in worsted weight, it knits up quickly.

Size/Measurements

Fits medium adult head (approx 22 inch circumference)

Materials

  • 2 skeins Knitpicks Wool of the Andes (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 110 yards/50 grams) or other worsted that knits to gauge. Shown in Jalapeno.
  • 16 or 25 inch circular needles US #5
  • 16 inch circular needles in US #7 or size to get gauge
  • 1 set US #7 DPN's or size to match circular
  • tapestry needle

Gauge

20 sts = 4 inches in stockinette on larger needles

Notes

Moss Stitch (or seed stitch)
This stitch pattern is worked flat over an odd number of stitches
Row 1 (RS): *K1, P1, repeat from * ending with knit stitch.
Row 2 (WS): Repeat Row 1
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until desired length

Instructions

  • Cast on 105 stitches with smaller needles.
  • Work 6 rows back and forth in Moss Stitch.
  • Next Row: Work 4 sts in Moss St, BO 3 sts, work in pattern to end.
  • Next Row: Work in Moss St to BO sts, Cast on 3 sts, work last 4 sts in pattern.
  • Work 6 more rows in pattern.
  • Next Row: BO 7 sts, work across in pattern.
  • Next Row: Purl across and join in the round.
  • Work next row in stockinette, increasing 28 sts evenly spaced as follows: *K4, M1, K3, M1, repeat from *. (126)
  • Work 3.5 inches in stockinette.
  • Decrease for crown as follows:
  • Row 1: *K16, K2tog, repeat from *. (119)
  • Row 2: Knit.
  • Row 3: *K15, K2tog, repeat from *. (112)
  • Row 4: Knit.
  • Row 5: *K14, K2tog, repeat from *. (105)
  • Row 6: Knit.
  • Continue in this manner until 63 sts remain on needles (switching to DPNs when needed).
  • Row 24: *K7, K2tog, repeat from *. (56)(
  • Row 25: *K6, K2tog, repeat from *. (49)
  • Row 25: *K5, K2tog, repeat from *. (42)
  • Continue decreasing every row until 7 sts are left.
  • Cut yarn tail and thread through remaining sts and pull tight. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • Sew button onto band. Add a pompom or bobble button on top of hat if you like.
  • Block by dampening hat and stretching over dinner plate. Dry completely.
